There is an alternative to the long wait for
the 2008 smart fortwo: the Original European Design smart car with
Mercedes engine, converted to U.S. safety and emissions standards.
They are higher in cost due to the conversion, but they are
available now.
The 2008 smart cars have turned out to be
one of the most popular rollouts in decades and are worth the wait.
The bad news is dealers are quoting an estimated pre-ordered wait
time of 12-22 months. There are over 40,000 people on the waiting
list for an available 25,000 cars this first year.
Though the new 2008s have a Mitsubishi
engine and are 7" longer, both designs are captivatingly similar.

fortwos, we have been driving ours for over two years. There is no
