ASmartCar.com is a St. Louis-based automobile wholesaler and
distributor of legally converted and modified versions of the smart
fortwo. We are the oldest independent Smart Car Dealer in the U.S.,
having sold Smart Cars since April 14th, 2006.
We formed a relationship with G&K Auto Conversion, the
government-approved Registered Importer of the smart fortwo. As
approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the
Department of Transportation (DOT), and the National Highway and
Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Our Mercedes-engine fortwos
have been
converted to U.S. Standards.
ASmartCar.com is
not affiliated in any way with the 2008 smart cars, but we will
still try answering any questions you may have about them.
The smart car was developed through the
unlikely partnership of Mercedes-Benz and Swatch (that's right, the
creators of those crazy watches). Mercedes supplied the creative
engineering and Swatch provided the innovative
and captivating
design.
In 1994 Mercedes-Benz and the Swatch Group
established Micro Compact Car GmbH. They launched the smart
city-coupé in nine European countries in 1998. To date, over 880,000
smart models have been sold within 36 countries, including the U.S., Canada
and Mexico.
The original Mercedes-engine smart fortwo is 8 feet, 2 inches from
stem to stern and a fraction less than 5 feet from door handle to
door handle. The smart will fit into less than half a normal-sized
parking space. In fact, it will fit on top of a pool table. The 2008
models are 7 inches longer and have a Mitsubishi engine.
As you might have guessed, the size and
weight (1,650 lbs*) of the smart, combined with its 3-cylinder,
turbo-charged (2005 & 2006 models only),
gasoline engine, make it one of the most fuel efficient gas-powered
cars on the planet. The EPA rates the mileage 40 city/40 highway,
but driver experience is closer to 43 city/53 highway. The EPA rates
the 2008 model 33 city/41 highway.
Euro NCAP, Europe's equivalent to the
National Transportation Safety Board, gives the 2005 and 2006 models a three-star
(out of four)
safety rating, ranking it decisively with all subcompact
participants.
The unique design of the smart fortwo
affords even tall folks a roomy ride. Although the safety conversion
includes a 2-inch ceiling pad, a 6-foot, 6-inch individual has
adequate headroom clearance.
Because of the small size, a great
engineering effort went into the safety of the car.
A unique Tridion safety shell (similar to a
walnut shell) surrounds the passenger compartment. Dual airbags are
standard and some cars may arrive with side airbags (cost
additional).
To improve handling performance, a slimmer
tire is used on the
front than the
back. In lieu of a spare
tire, a
compressor and sealant are included in case of a flat.
The smart (2-passenger) fortwo is
manufactured in three models:
- The entry level model is called the Pure,
- the next step up is a Pulse, and
- the top of the line Smart fortwo Passion.
ASmartCar.com is marketing the
Mercedes-engine smart fortwo Passion Coupé and the smart fortwo Passion Cabrio
(convertible). The cabrio availability is limited.
All our cars meet EPA/DOT/NHTSA Certification standards.
