The smart fortwo is rear-wheel drive due to the rear-mounted engine.

5. Can I import a pre-2008 fortwo from Europe?
Does G&K plan to import 2008 smart fortwos? Can I buy a converted
smart fortwo in Europe and ship it to the U.S.?
All DOT and EPA licensing has now expired. The
1,026 converted Mercedes-engine fortwos that are in the U.S. now are
the only fortwos that will ever be here.

I'm looking for a 4-door smart forfour. Where can I find one in the
U.S.?
The only version of the smart available in the
U.S. (converted pre-2008 and 2008) is the fortwo (2-door). The
forfour model was discontinued in 2006 and no longer in production
anywhere in the world.

10. Can I get a diesel version of the fortwo?
Initial indications from news reports are that
diesel smarts may be available in the U.S. by 2010 or 2011 at the
earliest. This is due to the new, stricter EPA regulations for
diesel cars in 2008.
Currently, the smart fortwo of any model year is
only available with a gas-powered engine.
